Agony and Ecstasy

Agony and Ecstasy are conjoined twin demons that have served Hell faithfully since time immemorial. They serve as punishers towards demon who break one of the laws of Hell and whom have been defeated by a human three times. As the rulership of Hell has changed, they have retained their position.

Agony and Ecstasy first appeared in Hellblazer issue 12 where Nergal receives warning from Agony and Ecstacy that he has only until dawn to collect Constantine's soul. Hell does not suffer failure lightly, and even a duke of mendacity like Nergal is not given special treatment by the triumvirate.

Agony and Ecstacy return to collect Nergal, after he failed to find Constantine by morning. Three times, John has bested Hell's demons, and in accordance with the laws, he is no longer their concern. However, the losses must not go unpunished, and Nergal must pay. Suddenly, though, Nergal receives a message from John, challenging him to fight in Newcastle. Agony and Ecstacy agree to let him fight in the challenge, and reserve their judgments for the loser. Nergal is destroyed by Heaven's light when John tricked him into following him through cyberspace.

Agony and Ecstacy made another appearance in the Sandman comics. They were summoned by Lucifer Morningstar to take the demon Choronzon away and punish him for failing defeat Dream of the Endless in the "oldest game".
